A Few Notes

Many of you have been asking about Philly Bill’s Dills the past few weeks, and wondering where our favorite pickle guy has gone. Well, Tyler’s been in touch, and, due to other work commitments, will unfortunately be unable to continue doing farmers markets this year.

Green Source is now Mediterra. New name, same great extra virgin olive oils and jarred specialties!

Classical guitarist Norm LeDonne is back to perform his eclectic repertoire for marketgoers tomorrow!

Asian-Inspired Cupcakes Return to Media Farmers Market!

Twelve Baskets Is Back!
Twelve Baskets 7.24.13After a few weeks away, Twelve Baskets, the creation of two cousins who love to bake, returns to the Market for the rest of the season. As young girls, these two cousins would hold bake sales on the front porch and pretend it was their very own bakery. Their late grandmother instilled in them an appreciation for food and a sense of heritage. They knew that they had to combine these somehow and came up with their Asian-inspired fusion cupcakes, with intriguing combinations like matcha green tea cupcake with green tea frosting and Granny Smith Apple cupcake with miso caramel frosting!

Featured Musician!

Classical guitarist Norm LeDonne returns again this season with his repertoire of songs from Bach to The Beatles!

Basil Lemon Smoothie

basil 7.17.13With abundant basil in season, and hot days as well, try sweet basil and tart lemon mixed together in a cold smoothie for a quick cool-down! Here’s an easy recipe from Food Network’s website.

Sweet Basil Smoothie
Ingredients
1 1/4 cups plain yogurt
1 cup packed fresh basil leaves
1 1/2 cups Lemon Simple Syrup
(recipe follows)
1 cup ice

Directions
In a blender, combine the yogurt, basil, Lemon Simple Syrup, and ice. Blend until smooth and frothy. Pour into frosted glasses and serve immediately.

Lemon Simple Syrup
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons lemon zest
In a small saucepan, combine the water, sugar, and lemon zest over medium heat. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Take the pan off the heat and allow the syrup to cool, about 20 minutes. Strain before using.

Yield: 4 (6-ounce) servings

P.S. Hillside Farm reminded us that basil flowers are as edible as the leaves, so if your stalk is topped with little basil flowers, include those, too!

Enjoy!
